London, May 2007:

A TASTE FOR GIVING
JDVSF Spring Gala and Wine-Tasting Auction

The John D.V. Salvador Foundation took a fresh approach to fund-raising for the St. Martin De Porres Children’s Village on May 10 at London’s Lanesborough Hotel, Hyde Park Corner. There from 7.00 p.m. to 11.45 p.m., over 100 friends of the St. Martin De Porres Children’s Village, the home for Manilla street children the JDVSF is now building, were treated to a wine tasting organized by David Harvey, sommelier from sous l'nez. The evening got off to a sparkling start as a sommelier team, associates, and friends of David Harvey who donated their time, offered sips of the 90 cases of red, white, rose, champagne, and orange wine to be auctioned off. Wielding the gavel was Anthony Barne MW, UK Head of wine at Bonhams, who orchestrated the vigorous bidding for the 60 lots, which in addition to wine also included 10 lots of glassware for afternoon tea or the holidays.

Guests’ appreciation for wine and the St. Martin cause proved a winning blend: The evening drew to a close with £95K raised. Of that the highest bid was £5,000.00 for a highly coveted red wine from Solicchiata, Italy, (vintage 2001-5). The best deal of the night went to a gentleman, who took home six cases of fine red, white, and rosé wine for just £600.

“We were really overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity,” says JDVSF Founding Chairman Lizelle Salvador. “Everyone, from the event’s sponsors to every bidder, who didn’t hesitate to drive up the prices for a good cause, made a contribution that will have a lasting effect on the lives of the children of St. Martin.” The over USD187,000 raised is earmarked for phase three of the project, the school that will be built after the new girls dormitory, now underway, is completed. The significant start on funding for the St. Martin children’s future leant the evening a spectacular finish.
